The Indian Navy has a strength of 53,000 (7500 officers) personnel which includes 5000 from the Naval Air Arm and approximately 2000 Marines from the Marine Commando Force which was formed in 1986. The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), currently Admiral Sureesh Mehta, at Naval HQ in New Delhi, is assisted by five Principal Staff Officers who also have assistants under them. The Principal Staff Officers all have ranks of Vice Admiral and include the following:
1. Vice Chief of Naval Staff
• Controller Warship Projects & Acquisition
• Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Perception & Planning)
• Director General Seabird
• Chief Hydro
2. Deputy Chief of Naval Staff
• Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Air)
• Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Ops)
• Flag Officer Naval Aviation
3. Chief of Personnel
• Director General Medical Services
• Assistant Chief of Personnel, Career Planning
• Assistant Chief of Personnel, Human Resources Development
4. Chief of Material
• Assistant Chief of Material (Dockyard & Refit)
5. Chief of Logistics
All senior appointments in the three naval commands are headed by Officers with ranks of Vice or Rear Admiral. The posts are;

• Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet
• Flag Officer Maharashtra Area
• Director General Naval Projects
• Admiral Superintendent DY
